BASELINE STUDIES
|
 |
| |
|

 |

|
Based upon our qualifications, we have the ability to conduct prehistoric and historic
archaeological studies, architectural surveys and historical research. Our
services are conducted within the guidelines as published by the National Park
Service, the Society of Professional Archaeologists (SOPA) and relevant state
agencies.
Our baseline studies are designed to identify the presence
or absence of cultural resources within a designated project area. This work
is usually designated as a Phase I Survey. This work involves two different applications;
a literature review and a field investigation. The literature review
identifies any previously recorded properties and/or sites in and around the project
area. Also, the literature review provides a synthesis of previous research
conducted in the immediate area of the project. Typically, state agencies require
the field investigation methodologies for a specific project to be grounded
in a local and/or regional research model. The research model will provide
background information on site types and preferred locations to aid in designing
the most effective sampling procedure for field testing.

Phase I Surface Collections

|
The second application of the Phase I Survey involves the field investigation portion
of the project. This includes the evaluation of any above-ground structures
along with a survey designed to locate the presence or absence of any archaeological
sites. The field survey methodology is based on a sampling program which
can include surface reconnaissance, excavation of small shovel tests placed at
specific intervals and/or the excavation of larger back hoe trenches in flood
plain areas.
During the design phase of the project, we will perform
a constraints analysis to help in avoiding known cultural resources and to identify
areas which are considered to have a high potential for containing archaeological
resources. This process can help in the preliminary identification of
areas which may be in the areas of project development. By conducting a comprehensive
literature review, alternatives and avoidance measures can be built into
a project from its inception.
