Through successful negotiations with state and federal agencies along with consideration of alternatives by our clients, the potential impacts to archaeological sites can often be reduced or eliminated during design of a project. When project impact to a significant site is unavoidable, the NHPA provides mitigation procedures to recover archaeological information before implementation of project goals. By closely coordinating all actions with the agencies involved, the results are usually in the form of an Agreement document which will cover the interests of all parties involved.

The Agreement document provides a specific set of guidelines to ensure evaluation of any cultural resources with minimal delay to the start-up of project actions. Agreement documents include Memorandum of Agreement that cover individual projects and Programmatic Agreements that may be used for a larger course of action or series of projects covered by the same agency.

Our personnel have the necessary experience to prepare Agreement documents, design and implement data recovery (site mitigations) projects at both historic and prehistoric archaeological sites while providing close coordination with all interested parties including Native American groups. During excavation of prehistoric sites, Native Americans can become official interested parties. Our Principle Investigator has worked closely with Native American groups and has received a written commendation from them for her efforts.

Other typical important aspects of mitigation planning can include measures for site monitoring where sites are to be avoided. We can design and implement short- or long-term monitoring procedures. Where significant properties are part of a project area and will be incorporated into the project design, our personnel can prepare National Register nominations and can design and implement exhibits and interpretative materials.
